The DC Metropolitan Police Department arrested a suspect in a series of dumpster fires that occurred primarily in D.C.’s Tenleytown neighborhood, with incidents spreading to Georgetown.听

The first fire started on the 4400 block of Wisconsin Avenue NW around 6:30 p.m. on November 20. Subsequently, more were reported on 40th Street, Yuma Street, and Veazey Street.听

More fires were reported on Thanksgiving in the 4500 and 4800 blocks of Wisconsin Avenue NW. Arson investigators are examining at least nine fires.听

This year, 10 cases of Arson were reported by Metro PD 鈥 a from 2022.听

In Tenleytown, the fires have impacted two local businesses, including the Solar Nail and Waxing Salon. Videos of an individual wearing a hooded sweatshirt and a leather jacket, throwing a lit match in a trashcan appeared on a local TV channel.

The trash was at the back of the Havana Smoke Shop, located under the Solar Nail and Waxing Salon on the 4400 block of Wisconsin Avenue.

最新蜜桃影像 reached out to Kathy Dang, the owner of Solar Nail and Waxing Salon, and she described the onset of the fire.

鈥淪omeone put the light in the trash can,鈥 Dang said.

Solar Nail and Waxing was open and serving a customer when the fire started. According to Dang, the fire started at a dumpster and quickly spread to her establishment, but no one was injured. The salon anticipates a closure of 4 to 5 months for repairs.

最新蜜桃影像 also contacted Vito Maggiolo, Public Information Officer for DC Fire & EMS. He provided insights into the department’s response.听

鈥淲e received a call originally for a reported dumpster fire. When we arrived, we found that the fire had extended from the dumpster to the rear of the structure, involving the 1st and 2nd floors.鈥

Maggiolo confirmed that no injuries were reported from these incidents and that the suspect had been arrested.听

Regarding the suspect鈥檚 identity, Lieutenant Murphy McAuley, a DC Metropolitan Police Manager for the Tenleytown area, clarified the department’s stance on revealing suspect identities.听

鈥淯nfortunately, I cannot disclose any suspect identity that is not within our policy,鈥 McAuley said.

McAuley also noted that MPD dealt with similar cases earlier this year.

鈥淢PD made an arrest in reference to multiple malicious burning buildings back in February 2023. But that case prosecution was denied. Not the same suspect,鈥 McAuley said.

最新蜜桃影像 reached out to the Office of the Attorney General and the Department of Corrections but did not get answers on the suspect鈥檚 identity. MPD said an Arson Investigator is in the process of working on the case.

The D.C. Council’s recent announcement of a free Master’s in Social Work (MSW) program at the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) in VanNess will address the city’s social worker shortage. This shortage, highlighted by a significant in homelessness in 2023, has put a strain on the district’s social services and mental health support systems.

Dr. Anika S. Burtin, Chair of UDC’s Education, Health, and Social Work Department, emphasized the program’s distinct role in meeting the city’s unique needs.听

“Our goal is to create a program that not only educates but also directly contributes to solving the city’s most pressing social issues, particularly mental health and homelessness,” Burtin said.听

The program, awaiting accreditation from the Council of Social Work Education, will be distinct from similar programs at Howard and Catholic Universities by ensuring a unique focus on the District鈥檚 specific challenges.

D.C. Councilmember Robert White was unavailable for an interview, but his spokesperson shared the importance of this topic with the politician through an email with the Wash.

After becoming the chair of the housing committee, White was confronted with the issue of homeless encampment clearings, notably at McPherson Square, and his interactions with unhoused residents who were waiting for housing vouchers due to process delays made him realize there was a shortage of caseworkers, the spokesperson said.听

White鈥檚 experience led to the creation of the . This will provide $6 million for four years as funding for the degree program at UDC for D.C. residents. The funds will cover the cost of books, exams, and living expenses.听

“This isn’t just about education; it’s about equipping our residents with the tools to make a tangible difference in the lives of many. It’s about uplifting our community from within,” White said in a release from his office.

Councilmember White emphasized the program’s importance in addressing the city’s systemic issues and making a lasting impact on the district.听

Will Doyle is the vice president of Housing First, a program at , a nonprofit whose mission is to help those who experience homelessness in the district.听

As a licensed clinical social worker, Doyle said that the nonprofit 鈥 which works closely with social workers, was impacted by the shortage.

鈥淲e would be able to employ many more [social workers], but due to the shortage, we can’t,鈥 Doyle said.

The free Masters in Social Work program at UDC marks a significant step towards addressing the social worker shortage in D.C., offering solutions to some of the city’s most persistent challenges.听The program, expected to begin in the fall of 2024 at UDC, will directly invest in the city’s future because it will target the district’s residents. For the past few weeks, a DC Office of Planning issued redevelopment framework draft of Wisconsin Avenue has generated talks around what many consider a 鈥済host鈥 neighborhood.

was released in September for a public comment period that will end on Nov. 15. After that time, The DC Office of Planning will revise and release a final framework.

Among the proposed changes in the draft is a proposal for a new electric bus garage on the site of the former Lord and Taylor department store鈥攁 plan that has divided community opinion and sparked debate about the future of this Washington, D.C. neighborhood.

Source: Wisconsin Avenue Development Framework Draft
“The garage is likely to be one- story at 44th Street and two stories at 45th Street, to account for the sloping terrain. WMATA is exploring the potential for mixed-use development above the new bus garage, subject to structural engineering considerations and a willing development partner,” 听DC Office of Planning.

ANC3 Commissioner Matt Cohen offered insights into the broader city planning efforts, framing the bus garage as part of a more extensive strategy.听

鈥淒C revisits a comprehensive plan every few years,听 which aims to update [zoning] based on development and other realities on the ground,” Cohen said.

While there is consensus on the need for revitalization, the proposed bus lot has emerged as a contentious point.听

“There’s also a sizable population that says, we have a need for whether it’s housing or a recreation center. Anything is better than a bus depot,” Cohen said.

This sentiment is rooted in a shared vision for a pedestrian-friendly, inclusive community. Residents express a desire for improvements that go beyond transportation.听

Among those joining the conversation is the local nonprofit organization, 最新蜜桃影像 spoke with Gail Sonnemann, the nonprofit’s Communications Specialist.

“When Ward 3 Housing Justice became aware that a new Western bus garage was going to be developed, we started organizing, reaching out to neighbors, and were helpful in extending communication more broadly,” Sonnemann said.听

An electric bus garage might not be a priority. (Julia Mouketo/最新蜜桃影像)

Through these efforts, Ward 3 Housing Justice was able to get Neighborgh鈥檚 insights on the bus garage project.听

鈥淎 neighbors group was formed, and it’s primarily those that abut the Lord and Taylor lot. And they have a lot of their concerns are a long list of don’ts,鈥 Sonnemann said.

Residents agree that change is needed but are vocal about the neighborhood鈥檚 priorities. An electric bus garage doesn鈥檛 seem to be one. However, one of the priorities for Friendship Heights residents is the need for after-school activities. There are about in DCPS and Public Charter Schools in the area, and there is not much to do.

“There’s really not all that much for [kids] to do after school,” Cohen said, highlighting the community’s aspiration for a more vibrant, youth-friendly environment.

While there are many conversations about the bus lot and the redevelopment as a whole, Commissioner Cohen emphasized the framework’s nature, describing it as a blueprint of ideas.

鈥淚t’s more conceptual and a document of ideas that will encourage change. So, some things may come to fruition. My guess is the majority won’t because change takes time and it’s hard,鈥 Cohen said about the framework.

This suggests that while the bus lot may be imminent, its final form could evolve with sustained public discourse.

While conversations around the redevelopment framework continue, the question of change remains on the table. Friendship Heights has gone through a lot of change over the last ten years. Commissioner Cohen explained that the neighborhood has lost a lot of its retail structures to the death of brick-and-mortar, followed by the COVID-19 pandemic.听

鈥淚f you go to Friendship Heights now, it’s a ghost town. Every other store is boarded up, and there aren’t many people coming to it as sort of a center of shopping and entertainment and things to do,鈥 Cohen said.

Video shot by a teenager and obtained recently by 最新蜜桃影像 raises questions about the actions of some DC Metropolitan police officers during what was described as a 鈥渄isorderly affray.鈥

According to a police report, a cruiser responded on October 13 to a parking lot adjacent to the Wawa convenience store on 40th Street NW.

Initial reports circulated on social media by DC Police stated, 鈥淭he crowd of approximately 300 juveniles was dispersed from the immediate area.鈥

The report did not state how they were dispersed, but video and audio recordings from that night show they did so, in part, using MPD-issued Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) spray.

Among those concerned about this tactic is a parent whose child obtained a video of the incident. She agreed to speak with 最新蜜桃影像 if we withheld her identity. She did not want her high school-aged child to get in trouble.

鈥淚 have a video of the police macing the students. And I have a video of students inside the Wawa grabbing milk to put milk on their eyes ’cause they can’t see,鈥 the mother told 最新蜜桃影像.

In addition to parental concerns over the use of pepper spray on teens, the parent said there were nowhere near 300 students present.

The Department later issued a new police report and said that about 50 juveniles were on the scene, with approximately 10 directly engaging in the altercation that erupted around 8 p.m. Despite the upheaval, no injuries were reported.

鈥淚 was just disheartened by the way it came out, and the correction was done kind of like it wasn’t a huge mistake. From 300 to 30 to 50 is a significant difference,鈥 The source said.

Captain Darren Haskis of the District Metropolitan Police Department, addressing the overestimation, clarified, 鈥淧ost a high school football game, what started as a dispute unfortunately escalated. We recognize and understand the concerns surrounding the initial overestimation.鈥

Based on the video, we can see several juveniles arguing and fighting outside of the Wawa. One officer is seen trying to move the crowd along while two other officers in another part of the parking lot shoot pepper spray at another group of teens.

The video also shows teenagers running inside the Wawa store, grabbing milk and pouring it into their eyes, a well-known relief from the burning sensation caused by OC spray.

最新蜜桃影像 asked the police about its protocols.

Captain Haskis said, 鈥淥ur officers are equipped with MPD-issued Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) spray for specific scenarios. However, its use on those under 12 is very restricted unless in dire situations.鈥

The Tenleytown Wawa convenience store is located 0.2 miles from Jackson-Reed High School, which hosted a football game against Dunbar High School on the night of the brawl.

Wawa convenience store Tenleytown
Tenleytown’s Wawa store was the scene of a fight and police action earlier this month.

When approached by the Wash about the incident, Jackson-Reed High School officials declined to comment on whether they were aware of the disturbance and if students had been disciplined.

However, the District of Columbia Public Schools(DCPS) said it had knowledge of the incident.

Kera Tyler, DCPS Public Information Officer, confirmed the involvement of Jackson-Reed High School students. Tyler further emphasized the broader implications of such incidents on the school environment.

鈥淲e don鈥檛 want that type of conflict to impact our students or to carry over to other campuses. The school is actively working to remediate the situation between students,鈥 Tyler said.

Given the uptick in juvenile-related incidents, Captain Haskis highlighted the MPD鈥檚 approach.

鈥淲e鈥檙e not just reacting to situations but also actively collaborating with schools and communities. Post the Wawa incident, we intensified our patrols around Jackson-Reed High School and took measures to prevent any escalation,” Haskis said.

最新蜜桃影像 tried to talk to Wawa staff about the incident. The store manager, citing company policy, declined to comment.

Around 6:30 p.m. on Friday, the Tenleytown-AU metro station was shut down, causing delays on the Red Line en route to Glenmont. The situation took an alarming turn as reports of smoke and a potential fire emerged.

The closure of the Tenleytown station caused significant disruptions for Red Line commuters heading to Glenmont. In the nearby Bethesda and Friendship Heights stations, metro card scanning systems were down, allowing passengers to pass through without paying.

The Tenleytown station shutdown lasted about one hour, forcing over fifty red-line riders traveling in the Glenmont direction to disembark at Friendship Heights and transfer to a shuttle service to Van Ness Station.

When attempting to talk to the DC transit police on the scene, they said the station was closed for maintenance reasons.

However, Vito Maggiolo, the DC Fire & EMS Department’s Public Information Officer, confirmed that the firefighters came to Tenleytown Metro Station due to reports of smoke.

“The Fire & EMS responded because there was smoke in the tunnel. They found that there was an insulator issue. The Fire department has cleared the scene.” Maggiolo said.

On-call Public Information Officer for WMATA, Tierra Hill, said an arcing insulator issue caused the smoke.听

“The defective insulator was removed, and normal service was restored,” said Hill.听

According to a by the Federal Transportation Agency,听electrical arcing happens when a strong electric current escapes from a power cable and runs along the surfaces of train trackswhich can be covered in dust, rust, dirt, and grime.

Arcing can be a problem because it can damage cables and tracks, create bursts of light, and even start fires.听The smoke from arcing can be harmful to passengers, workers, and emergency responders because it might contain poisonous fumes.

However, this Friday’s incident is not a first for WMATA or the Red Line. The 2016 FTA report noted听听70 arcing incidents between October 26, 2015, and October 21, 2016. Most incidents occurred on the red line, with a high concentration between the Medical Center and Van Ness stations.

Despite adopting safety measures, WMATA’s indicates 16 arcing insulator incidents, a higher number than in

In a recent security incident, a section of Van Ness Street NW, adjacent to the Chinese Embassy in Washington, D.C., was temporarily closed by the Secret Service on September 26th. The closure was prompted by the discovery of a suspicious package, raising concerns about the safety of foreign embassies in the nation’s capital.

Secret Service Public Information Officer Anthony Guglielmi shed light on the incident, telling 最新蜜桃影像 that heightened vigilance is standard procedure around embassies and foreign missions.听

“Our awareness and vigilance around embassies and foreign missions are very high,” Guglielmi said.听

He explained that such incidents often involve unattended items or bags left near embassy premises and that authorities proactively ensure public safety.

Guglielmi explained that, at the time of the discovery, there was no evidence of malicious intent associated with the suspicious package found near the Chinese Embassy. While the Secret Service did not disclose the content of the package, it is worth noting that such discoveries lead to security threats.

最新蜜桃影像 contacted the Chinese Embassy about the suspicious package through email.

鈥淲e are not aware of the details, and we suggest you consult DC authorities,鈥 The Chinese Embassy Spokesperson replied.

This incident follows earlier security concerns this year when suspicious packages were discovered at the Russian Embassy in and . These incidents also prompted heightened security measures and investigations.

American University Professor of International Studies Joseph Young, an expert in foreign relations and domestic terrorism, said foreign embassies were symbolic. They represent the territory of another sovereign state within a host nation, making them accessible outlets for expressing discontent.听

“It becomes an easy access point to strike out if you’re upset with another country,” Professor Young said.

The recent security incident near the Chinese Embassy also follows a .听

On Sep. 24, a Molotov cocktail was thrown at the Cuban Embassy in Washington, D.C., causing no harm or significant damage. Secret Service officers quickly responded to the incident in the Adams-Morgan area. While Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez labeled it a “terrorist attack,” no one was hurt. This event follows a at the embassy by a Cuban asylum seeker.

Young suggested that such incidents may be related to the fact that authoritarian countries are often targeted due to restrictions on dissent and protest within their borders, making embassies grounds for expression.听

“It’s impossible, let’s say if you are a Cuban dissident in the U.S., to strike out at Castro, but you can certainly throw a Molotov cocktail at the embassy,” Young said.听听

Embassies have been, for a long time, places where people go to protest peacefully. Young underscored the importance of supporting peaceful protests as a fundamental democratic right.听

“This is a cornerstone of democracy, being able to go out into the streets and protest things that you think are unfair,” Young said.

Among frequent protesters is the Adas Israel Congregation, which currently leads monthly demonstrations at the Chinese embassy. Members of the congregation routinely protest what they describe as “the Chinese government’s genocidal actions against the 12 million Uyghur minority.”

In a 2022 , the听Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), said that the Chinese government’s treatment of the Uyghur听may be considered听crimes against humanity.

The congregation’s Uyghur Crisis Response Teams Co-chair Karen Guberman shared the group’s experience protesting with 最新蜜桃影像.

“We always feel very safe because The Secret Service is always there and we don’t use loud speaking devices or anything like that, so we don’t need a permit,” Guberman said.

In terms of security for the surroundings of the embassies, Guglielmi said that, in worst-case scenarios, security incidents are typically confined to the embassy premises. Therefore, they are not a direct threat to neighboring residential areas.

The Secret Service has not provided any update on the suspicious package found near the Chinese Embassy. Guglielmi said it suggests there is nothing to worry about.

The first time Sara Curtin performed at the Art All Night Festival two years ago, it was with Maureen Andary, under their folk duo 鈥淭he Sweater Set.鈥 This year will be a little different, but Curtin鈥檚 excitement remains the same.

A Tenleytown-bred musician 鈥 Curtin will play on the Middle C Music stage on Sep. 30th with her band for Art All Night. The location doesn鈥檛 get old for Curtin, even though she has performed there multiple times.听

“It is also a fun opportunity to see a lot of intergenerational people I know from different areas and different events in my life throughout; from childhood to adulthood,” Curtin said.

Cutin loves performing at Art All Night, specifically in Tenley, because of her roots. A native of Friendship Heights, she loves that the festival brings together longtime businesses and community members.

One of these businesses is the music store 鈥淢iddle C Music,鈥 which General Manager Nick Cervone said has been a partner of Art All Night for as long as he can remember. This year, just like the others, they expect a big attendance.听

The event, Cervone said, “totally brings a lot of people to the store,” many of them being “people who didn’t know that Middle C was here.”

Middle C Music is one of 12 venues hosting events in Tenleytown during Art All Night. This year, the store will host visual artists in the store, and their wide sidewalk area will welcome a stage and an audience to watch the performers throughout the night.
