Hours ahead of election results, drums sounded and prayers went up at the Black Lives Matter Plaza today in preparation for what could be a celebration if Biden wins, according to protesters.

However, many businesses near Pennsylvania Avenue have boarded their doors in fear of civil unrest.聽

On Oct. 29, during a press conference, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser expressed her concerns of protests potentially becoming unruly in the District, and protester Esm猫 Matthews agrees.

鈥淚 voted for Biden, and if Trump wins I don鈥檛 think it鈥檚 going to go well it鈥檚 going to be extreme unrest in this city and across the country,鈥 Matthews said.聽

However, optimistic protesters like Estrella Lopez believe it will be the opposite of chaos.

鈥淚鈥檓 here to pray for the White House because I believe in prayer and I think my prayer is going to move mountains and Joe is going to take over the White House,鈥 Lopez said. 鈥淓ven if he doesn鈥檛, something good will still come out of this election.鈥

There was a line around the building at School Without Walls at Francis Stevens when early voting opened last Tuesday. By 6 p.m. election night, however, those lines had slowed to a trickle.

Polling place manager Egypt Jones said early and absentee voting but into Election Day crowds. Jones said almost 3,000 people have cast their ballot at the polling location in the last week.

Some Ward 2 residents, however, like Sara Aguiniga, were still casting their vote even as polls neared close. Aguiniga said she had intended to vote absentee, but her ballot never arrived.
鈥淭hankfully the voting process was seamless,鈥 Aguiniga said.

D.C. doesn鈥檛 require photo ID to vote, meaning Aguiniga just had to give her first and last name and address. Jones said that鈥檚 what has made the process so smooth, even for last minute voters like Aguiniga.

鈥淚t hasn鈥檛 taken anyone more than five minutes,鈥 Jones said.

Regarding the national races, Aguiniga said she voted for Joe Biden for president. Locally, she voted to reelect D.C. Councilmember Brooke Pinto for the Ward 2 council seat. Aguiniga said she was excited to see Pinto at the polling place doing some last-minute campaigning.

鈥淚 like that she is a younger woman,鈥 Aguiniga said. 鈥淚 appreciate her concern for the city.鈥

Three thousand candles line the steps of National City Christian Church on 14th Street & Massachusetts Avenue. Interfaith individuals across the nation are calling on a day of prayer and meditation, and this church is serving as a hub for activity.

A program called 鈥 standing for mobilizing, organizing, registering and energizing 鈥 will air at the top of each hour until 9 p.m. At that time, a two-hour national program will air, filled with music, prayers, speeches from local interfaith leaders and testimonies from others.

Rev. Liz Theoharis, director of the in New York City and co-chair of the , came from New York to help organize the event.

“Folks here are singing songs, ringing bells, sounding the shofar and praying that every vote gets counted,” Theoharis said.

Interfaith volunteers flocked to the church early evening Tuesday to line its steps with thousands of small, plastic candles.

“We’re lighting 3,000 candles, which we hope are symbolic in leading us into the light,” said Arlene Holt-Baker, chair of . “Tonight, the steps of this church will shine so bright.”

While the Nationals Park voting super center supported over 6,700 in-person voters since early voting started, only a couple hundred actually did so on Election Day.

This morning at Nationals Park was windy and quite chilly. Election workers had already been in position for the past week. They鈥檝e had practice at their posts, helping voters through the process to ensure they鈥檙e accurately registered and their ballots were filled out.

The concourse had been made into a voting assembly line normally used by the PNC Diamond Club, a venue that costs $195 per game for front row seats on the field. The seats also must be purchased a year in advance. Today though, the club鈥檚 Edison bulb mood lighting gave voters just enough light to know what registration table they were being directed to.

As of 1 p.m., the count was only 314 voters though. According to Cheryl Tyler, the voting space opened at 7 a.m. expecting a larger crowd, the official in charge of the polling place. While a jump of adrenaline coursed through when the fire alarm went off in the first hour of voting, even that turned out to be a simple malfunction.

The efficiency of the voting place has overcome the expectation of the park staff as well. 鈥淭hey told us they were impressed by how quick we got through people,鈥 Tyler said about the one, and only, time a line has formed out of the building. It was one the first day of early voting, and it lasted about 15 minutes. Since then, media, campaign supporters and special interests generally outnumber the voters.

A spokesperson for the Nationals confirmed that all of the venue time had been donated in non-partisan support of voting in the District.

How about a cheeseburger with your ‘I voted’ sticker? Pizza to the Polls, a nonprofit organization whose slogan is “democracy is delicious,” has been passing out free food around polling sites this week.

Lucy Werner, a volunteer with the organization, said she’s been in the District for the past five days, passing out everything from Kind bars to chips and salsa to pizza to voters and anyone else who happens to pass by.

Mid-day Nov 3, the group was outside the Union Market voting supercenter handing out free waters and Shake Shack cheeseburgers. Pizza to the Polls partners with local restaurants who donate the food to encourage people to get out and vote, Werner explained.

The organization is non-partisan. “We are just here literally to support everyone – anyone and everyone who walks by. It is free food for all,” said Werner.
