鈥淓specially with my female friends and my girlfriend, I鈥檓 much more intentional than ever about making sure they鈥檙e not traveling alone.鈥�

听The Metropolitan Police Department that this year the number of homicides has grown by 10% compared to 2020. Crane says he experienced a drive-by shooting just last week while at a friend鈥檚 apartment in Navy Yards.听

听鈥淎t this point, there鈥檚 a stabbing or a shooting every day now,鈥� he said.

听MPD reports don鈥檛 show the same rise in assaults and robberies, but WMATA data tells a different story about crime on public transit.

听In November, there were 22 incidences of aggravated assault , jumping over 40% from November 2020. Rates of robbery reported by WMATA doubled for the same period. The vast majority of these crimes are committed on trains.听

According to a video released by the WMATA, a person jumped in front of the metro train around 1 p.m. Metro Transit Police later ruled their death as a suicide.

Shuttle buses were also available for residents to commute to different lines or intersections during the time of suspension.听

D.C. resident Tera-Marie Jones said she always takes the Farragut West station home after work but was surprised to hear that an incident like this would happen.听

鈥淚 am not used to something like this. Once I realized I couldn鈥檛 use this stop, I just figured I Uber home instead of walking,鈥� Jones said. 鈥淏ut it is really unfortunate for something like this to happen to someone.鈥�

D.C. resident Delores Wray said it鈥檚 unfortunate that someone would take their life.听
