The U.S. Navy and developer Redbrick LMD plan to swap two parcels of land in the Navy Yard neighborhood that will allow the Navy to build a new home for its museum and Redbrick to construct a retail plaza.

After gaining approval from the National Capital Planning Commission in early November, Redbrick and the Navy Yard are now working out the details in private.

The Navy鈥檚 current museum is located within Navy Yard walls and requires visitors to pass through to visit. The new location will be on Fourth and Tingey streets, SE.

Lieutenant Ian McConnaughey, a spokesperson for Naval History and Heritage Command, said the Navy Museum Development Foundation, a non-profit partner of the Navy, is raising funds to develop and construct the new museum building.

鈥淭he Navy intends to hold a groundbreaking event on the Navy’s birthday in 2025,鈥 McConnaughey said. 鈥淭he opening of the museum depends on funding, regulatory approvals, and other factors inherent to the construction process.鈥

According to McConnaughey, the land swap came about because the Washington Navy Yard wanted to oversee the development of the parcel of land now leased to Redbrick. Brookfield Properties, another real estate company that initially had development rights for the parcel, had plans to construct a high-rise residential building there.

The Navy took issue with the placement of that building, however. It said the building would stand too close to the yard, therefore posing 鈥溾 in that it made the Navy Yard susceptible to eavesdropping.

鈥淎cquiring the land will allow the Navy to control potential future reuse of the land, thus mitigating security concerns,鈥 McConnaughey said.

The Navy Yard offered a parcel of land from its campus. The Navy will retain ownership of the land but will lease it to Redbrick, which now controls the parcel, for development.

The Navy intends to use the swap and construction of a new museum building to improve upon the current museum鈥檚 design.

鈥淐urrently, we are holding working groups around the country with active-duty sailors in an effort to come up with new ideas and elements, in order to get their take on how they would like to see their service represented in the new museum,鈥 McConnaughey said. 鈥淭heir responses, along with input from other stakeholders, will help the National Museum of the U.S. Navy’s curatorial team develop the museum’s interpretive plan.鈥

McConnaughey said the new building鈥檚 plan will also involve technological developments to better display the exhibits and make the museum more accessible overall. The current museum stands within the Navy Yard鈥檚 walls and requires all visitors to pass through significant security measures to just get into the parking lot.

鈥淭hat plan will ensure the new facility is a purpose-built museum that will allow the Navy to tell its story using state-of-the-art technology combined with the Navy’s vast collection of artifacts, artwork, and manuscripts,鈥 McConnaughey said. 鈥淲e’re excited by exploring the possibility of using technology to personalize experiences for our visitors and to allow veterans to see images and artifacts connected to their own service.鈥

The on the matter made to the National Capital Planning Commission said that the land going to Redbrick will be developed into residential, retail, hospitality, and office spaces, although the exact plans at this stage are not clear.

Redbrick LMD did not return 最新蜜桃影像鈥檚 requests for comment.

A boost in business

Ted Juthras, vice president of planning and public realm for the Capitol Riverfront Business Improvement District, said he expected the developments to affect the surrounding areas for the better.

鈥淭he museum will likely draw over a million additional visitors to the neighborhood each year, which will help bolster our retail market and market the neighborhood to prospective residents and commercial tenants,鈥 Juthras said.

Chloe Donnelly, a resident of neighboring Southwest Waterfront, said she liked the idea of the Redbrick development plans, but she felt that there were other issues that she was more concerned about at the moment, given the increase in crime in the neighborhood.

鈥淚 think whoever is doing the developing needs to work with the city to make it safer, and in my opinion that starts with grassroots efforts to improve quality of life for low-income families,鈥 Donnelly said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 not an immediate solution and would take time, but I think if more funding is going to go toward making things safer, then funding should also go toward addressing the cause of crime.鈥

Protestors gathered at the Ellipse this evening to call for a ceasefire in Gaza, using the lighting of the National Christmas Tree to garner attention for their cause.

The protest and prayer vigil was staged outside of the entrance for the National Christmas Tree, in view of the White House. 最新蜜桃影像 30 protestors stood alongside the lines of people waiting to enter the park for the tree lighting, singing and offering pamphlets from the Institute for Middle East Understanding.听

One of the organizers for the vigil is Philip Farah, a founding member of the Palestinian Christian Alliance for Peace (PCAP). Farah is a Palestinian Christian who grew up in Jerusalem, with many family members in Gaza.

鈥淢y family members lived in the Zeitoun [Gaza] neighborhood, close to their Church of St. Porphyrius, one of the oldest churches in the world,鈥 Farah said. 鈥淚srael bombed St. Porphyrius on Oct. 19, killing many who were sheltering there. Four of those killed were my relatives.鈥

Farah said that PCAP worked with a multitude of other organizations to stage the protest and prayer vigil, and that he was just one part of a much larger movement.

Many of the protestors who spoke to 最新蜜桃影像 asked not to be named for fear of repercussions faced by people voicing their support for Palestine.

鈥淚鈥檓 here because I believe in humanity, and I think what is happening right now is so horrific. It violates almost every single humanitarian law,鈥 one such protestor said. 鈥淲e need a permanent ceasefire. Enough is enough.鈥

Another protestor, who went by the name Jane, said she woke up this morning thinking about what Joe Biden鈥檚 mother might think of his decisions regarding Palestine and Israel.

鈥淚 looked her [Biden鈥檚 mother] up and found this quote that sort of sang out to me: 鈥楥ourage is the greatest virtue, because without it, we cannot love with abandon,鈥欌 Jane said. 鈥淏iden needs to find the courage to stand up to the people who are telling him anything other than what his conscience, and what the Pope, is saying. The Pope is coming through to say that this violence is terrorism.鈥

Another protestor said she just wanted to see both sides come together to work toward peace.

鈥淚 would just like to see peace,鈥 this protestor said. 鈥淭his killing, and this violence is horrible. It鈥檚 horrific. I don鈥檛 sleep when I think about it at night.鈥

Another protestor said that as an Arab-American, she had a strong personal investment in Palestinian cause.

鈥淚 have to say that the Palestinian cause is near not just to everyone who is seeing this awful carnage, but to Arabs around the world. Not just Palestinians,鈥 she said. 鈥淏illions of tax dollars are going to Israel for arms, instead of reparations, instead of money for the schools, instead of housing. I think the average American doesn鈥檛 want our names on these bombs that are coming to Israel and killing thousands of Palestinian children.鈥

Farah said that Palestinian Christian communities in Israel had canceled their Christmas celebrations due to the violence and injustice.

鈥淗ow can they celebrate Christmas in Bethlehem when their countrymen are being slaughtered in Gaza?鈥 Farah said. 鈥淭hey canceled celebrations in Bethlehem because there is no peace or justice in the place where Jesus was born, no peace under a murderous Israeli occupation.鈥

The Southeast/Southwest Freeway bridges are suffering from deterioration, but construction cannot begin on a District Department of Transportation plan to fix them until funding is secured.

DDOT initiated the to repair and improve bridges across I-695, as well as providing better lighting, signs, and drainage alongside the freeway. The most important aspect, however, involves the repairs made to the bridges鈥 infrastructure.

The New Jersey Avenue Bridge, in particular, suffers from steel corrosion and concrete deterioration of its pilings. The deterioration is notable, but not so severe that the bridge must be shut down.

According to the DDOT Freeway Rehabilitation project overview, the damage comes from the natural wear and tear of age and exposure to the elements. The bridges were originally built in the early 1960s and were last updated in 1991.

Construction on the Southeast/Southwest Freeway Bridges is still a few years to come, according to the District Department of Transportation.

DDOT Public Information Officer German Vigil said that the project is still in its design phase, but that the department expects to see construction begin in three years, if all goes well.

鈥淲e are currently at that 65% design development milestone,鈥 Vigil said. 鈥淐onstruction is projected to start in 2026 depending on funding availability.鈥

Vigil emphasized that work can only begin when the project鈥檚 funding is secured.

鈥淭he project is estimated to last two to three years from its start date,鈥 Vigil said. 鈥淭his is all dependent on funding and procurements. Once that is confirmed, we can provide a construction schedule with more details, which will all be posted on our website.鈥

Since the project is still in its earliest stages, many residents of neighborhoods surrounding the freeway bridges are unaware of the potential construction.

鈥淚 haven鈥檛 heard anything,鈥 said Navy Yard resident Justin Purvis. 鈥淣ot at all.鈥

According to the project overview, DDOT expects to see an increase in traffic and a decrease in parking availability as construction begins.

Vigil said that, as of now, residents should not expect any immediate road closures due to construction on the project, but that DDOT will continue to update surrounding communities with information about how they will be impacted.

鈥淒DOT is conducting robust traffic analysis and will conduct extensive public engagement with ANCs and members of these communities, which will inform residents of the traffic management plan,鈥 Vigil said. 鈥淩esidents are encouraged to visit and sign up for project updates.鈥

Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner Matt LaFortune, who is the chair of ANC 6B’s Transportation Committee, said that the ANC was in communication with DDOT to plan for any future road closures.

“We are expecting them,” LaFortune said. “We asked [DDOT] a number of questions at our meeting where they presented this project about their plan for road closures. They’re expected to keep at least one lane both ways going throughout, but we ask that they communicate with us if there’s going to be any impact on traffic in the neighborhood.”

LaFortune also said that DDOT had spoken to ANC 6B about the necessity of securing funding for the project, while also assuring them that any minor delays they encountered would not represent a danger to the bridges.

“It didn’t seem from DDOT that if [construction] got pushed back six months or even a year, that that would be critical,” he said. “But we were hearing from them that they did want to move, move on this. The sooner the better, I guess.”

The post Navy Yard ANC calls for license revocation for apartment management over poor conditions first appeared on 最新蜜桃影像.

The Navy Yard Advisory Neighborhood Commission is continuing its campaign to get the District government to crack down on the company that manages the apartment building, Onyx on First.

At its most recent meeting in October, ANC 8F urged the Office of the Attorney General to follow up on the ANC鈥檚 earlier resolution to revoke management operations at Onyx on First apartments.

Residents of the apartments came to ANC 8F Chairman Edward Daniels last year with complaints about the property, including resistance to maintenance issues, security concerns, and hostility and derision from property managers. At residents鈥 request, the ANC passed a resolution in July to 鈥渁lert, abate and revoke UIP Property Management at Onyx on First.鈥

The July resolution asked the Department of Licensing and Consumer Protection to suspend the business license of Onyx鈥檚 parent company, UIP Property Management. It also asked that the D.C. Zoning Commission Board stay any requests to build new UIP properties in the city, that the Department of Buildings follow up on Onyx residents鈥 abatement requests, and that the D.C. Office of the Attorney General investigate UIP and its residents鈥 complaints.

James Simmons, who lived at the Onyx on First in 2021, confirmed many of the complaints brought forward by residents.

鈥淚 can confirm things are pretty bad there. I used to live there with my roommate, and our unit was across from the one that caught fire,鈥 Simmons said. 鈥淭he flooding damaged the whole floor, and we were unable to stay there for a while, given the blowers working all day to dry the place out.鈥

Residents also complained about a lack of security. Cars were stolen out of the Onyx鈥檚 garage, which had been left open, and people were found sleeping in the hallways. Simmons said he had personal experience with Onyx鈥檚 security failures.

鈥淓arly last year, we had a break-in where a woman got into my room through our balcony during some sort of mental episode. She fell or jumped from my balcony when running from the police,鈥 Simmons said.

Another former resident, who wished to remain anonymous due to past incidents of hostility from UIP management, also spoke about the lack of communication between property management and residents.

鈥淚n January before I moved out, the sprinklers went off and the communication around that was terrible. They didn鈥檛 help people find hotel rooms or communicate when we could return,鈥 the resident said.

One current Onyx resident, who also wishes to remain anonymous due to past UIP management hostility, said that she and her husband had also noticed the management鈥檚 failure to communicate.

鈥淪o we moved in this early summer after taking over a lease from a friend of mine,鈥 the resident said. 鈥淭here has been an estimate of three property managers that have abruptly left or been fired. No emails at all about the change or staff or who the staff is in general.鈥

Simmons said he was glad to have moved out of the Onyx.

鈥淚 didn鈥檛 have anything close to that with my other two apartments I鈥檝e lived at here in D.C. It鈥檚 pretty shocking to think about in hindsight, but at the time, I think I was just telling myself that these are isolated incidents,鈥 Simmons said.

A long-running problem

Onyx鈥檚 problems are not isolated incidents. Residents claim the issue stems from a central source: UIP Property Management, Inc.

The company represents the property management arm of the Urban Investment Partners group and owns several properties all across D.C. It describes itself as 鈥減roviding exemplary, proactive, and responsive customer service.鈥

Its website offers various about the helpfulness of UIP property managers.

Justin Purvis, a resident of the Kiley apartment building, another UIP property on Fourth Street in the Navy Yard, said that while the management at his building had been very helpful, the management on the corporate level of UIP had not.

鈥淸Kiley management] has been great. They’ve been responsive to everything, doing everything they can do, escalating it to the corporate side of things. And then after that, there hasn’t been anything that they’ve been able to really do,鈥 Purvis said. 鈥淭he managers have been fine. But the corporation has been crazy.鈥

Purvis said that he had looked into the Onyx when he was searching for a place to live, but he chose the Kiley because it was a newer building. This proved to be a good choice, and the building saw very few maintenance issues overall. However, earlier this year, Purvis noticed something strange in his bank records.

最新蜜桃影像 six months ago, Purvis paid his rent in full through the UIP online rental portal, as he normally did, almost $4,000 total. Several days later, the system claimed that the payment did not go through and automatically pulled another $4,000 directly from Purvis鈥 bank account.

鈥淭hey had some kind of payment glitch or something. And then they said that my bank didn’t send them the funds,鈥 Purvis said. 鈥淭hey just did it automatically. They didn’t send me a notice. It was more like four grand because they took everything, they took the whole thing, the water that goes into it, and parking and everything.鈥

Purvis said he did not have automatic payments set up with the Onyx portal, so it was unusual for them to take the second payment again without notifying him directly.

Purvis said that other residents of the Kiley had also dealt with the rental portal issue.

鈥淚’m not the only one in the building that has had this problem. It鈥檚 six or seven people in the building that it鈥檚 an issue with,鈥 Purvis said.

Purvis said that the rent portal issue was where his troubles with the management at Kiley and UIP began.

鈥淚’ve sent emails to the manager here, she escalated. I sent it to the district person and never got a response,鈥 Purvis said. 鈥淚 actually caught the district person here one day and got her to talk to me for a few seconds, and I just got the same runaround answer of, 鈥楾here’s nothing we can do, I’m going to be on top of it, I’m new in this position.鈥欌

Purvis said he had found a way to deal with the problem, but he knew others may not be so fortunate.

鈥淔or me, it wasn’t the biggest deal in the whole world. I had extra money in there. It didn’t ruin my weekend,鈥 Purvis said. 鈥淏ut they took it out on a Thursday. If it had happened to somebody else, and they can’t live without that kind of money, or they have kids. That鈥檚 a whole weekend without that money. That鈥檚 a big deal.鈥

Purvis said the Kiley property manager eventually recognized their team鈥檚 mistake and apologized to him, which he appreciated. But he can no longer use the portal to pay his rent.

鈥淸Kiley management] has been keeping on point of things and making sure not to charge me a late fee, because I can’t use the portal to pay anymore,鈥 Purvis said.

What鈥檚 being done

ANC Chairman Daniels repeated his request that the D.C. attorney general investigate UIP at the most recent ANC meeting.

ANC members and the Office of the Attorney General have not responded to 最新蜜桃影像鈥檚 requests for comment.

Daniels said that when Onyx residents put up posters advertising a mental health support group, the property manager at the time tore them down, saying they, 鈥渄idn鈥檛 apply to everyone in the building.鈥

鈥淚deally this agenda item would not be at an ANC meeting, but because we don’t have any other recourse and since it鈥檚 been months since I was brought into the discussion and have gotten nowhere with the regional property management, I wanted to introduce this resolution,鈥 Daniels said.

One Onyx resident, who went by Brendon, said at the July ANC meeting that UIP had failed them on an 鈥渦nconscionable鈥 level.

鈥淎ny requests, questions, concerns or communication with the management about the ongoing issues in the building are met with either silence, hostility, closed office doors, physical and verbal assault, and threats of financial penalty against residents,鈥 the resident said. 鈥淯IPPM must be held responsible for the rapid deterioration and unsafe living environment that they have knowingly allowed to continue. That鈥檚 it. It鈥檚 as simple as that.鈥

Onyx and UIP did not return 最新蜜桃影像鈥檚 requests for comment.

The Capitol City Circus School held its final performance of the show 鈥淢onster Mash鈥 this past Saturday evening鈥攁 Halloween-themed ensemble involving colorful costumes and a spooky soundtrack.

The Capitol City Circus School teaches a variety of aerial arts, trapeze and acrobatics, with its performances usually showcasing its students鈥 skills. The Monster Mash show, however, consisted entirely of school staff.

Lindsay Schukosky, a coach at the school and performer at Monster Mash, said the show was the first of its kind.

鈥淭his is our very first staff show. A lot of our shows have students, which is fun, but this one was just all staff,鈥 she said.

The Monster Mash show involved a series of performances, each with their own monster theme, costuming and form of acrobatics. The performers stepped into the roles of mummies, vampires, witches and skeletons.

The Capitol City Circus School holds classes for children and adults, and accepts people of all experience levels. It also offers workshops for large groups and parties.

Schukosky said she has worked with the school for four years now, and that she has enjoyed every minute.

鈥淚鈥檓 one of the newer people, and I鈥檓 a mom,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 just started and it鈥檚 just amazing. I love it here. I love it, they鈥檝e trained me to do so many things. I get to coach and perform and play with friends. It鈥檚 so fun.鈥

Schukosky said the school was open to anyone who was interested in learning and highly recommended that new people join.

鈥淚 was a gymnast in college, and then I took 15 years off to be a mom and do all that stuff, and then I decided to get back into it. I just started over, and it was so wonderful,鈥 she said. 鈥淏ring friends, anyone can do it, all levels. Anyone is welcome, and we support everyone. We鈥檒l help you, and it鈥檚 a wonderful community to be a part of.鈥

Audience members reacted to the performances with great enthusiasm, with one person comparing the performances to a much more famous production.

鈥淲e were at Cirque de Soleil last Friday. We came [to Monster Mash] this week and it was definitely just as exciting,鈥 said Chris Parkison. 鈥淭he amount of athleticism and artistry was really amazing. I was just really impressed with what they were able to do.鈥

鈥淚 thought the show was great. It seems like a lot of the performers had a lot of excellent athleticism and really showcased their character and artistry. It was well done,鈥 said another audience member, Morgan Bailey.

Schukosky said that anyone who missed the Monster Mash performance this weekend can attend the Circus School鈥檚 student show tonight or Thursday.

]]>
Redevelopment of underpass areas beneath Interstate 695 in Southeast, D.C. is moving forward, with construction expected to begin by the end of the year, community partners of the project say.

The Capitol Riverfront Business Improvement District hopes its plan to connect the Navy Yard and Capitol Hill neighborhoods will make the area friendly to pedestrians and revitalize underused spaces. The BID proposed the plan in August 2022, and the project has moved along steadily since.

Erik Salmi, deputy chief of staff for Ward 6 Councilmember Charles Allen, said that those involved were still trying to find a contractor for the section of the plan near Garfield Park, which delayed the project somewhat, but they expected to see construction begin by the end of the year.

鈥淐ouncilmember Allen has been pushing to create that space, working with DDOT, funding it in the budget. We鈥檙e all systems go at this point,鈥 Salmi said.

Salmi said there were active communities on either side of Virginia Avenue that would benefit from making the area more walkable.

鈥淭he Virginia Avenue underpass connects to a dog park and another part of the underpass that has a really nice vibrant park already in place, and I think you can get a good sense there of what we鈥檙e trying to get to in terms of creating a welcoming and fun and open space that people of all ages can enjoy,鈥 Salmi said.

Salmi said it was an exciting project and he was glad people were taking an interest. The plan overall includes a variety of different small developments across the length of the highway, including new murals, green spaces, and sidewalks with better lighting.

鈥淭he idea is to create both a safe and welcoming place to cross underneath 695, which obviously is not friendly to pedestrians at all, and at the same time, use that space to create more park space, gathering space, community space, and do so in a way that assures neighbors on both sides feel like they own it,鈥 Salmi said.

Many residents echoed Salmi鈥檚 enthusiasm for the project.

鈥淎 lot of these places would benefit from better lighting and plants,鈥 resident Diego Garces said.

Resident Jason Secrest said he 鈥渄idn’t know about the project, but it鈥檚 long overdue.鈥

The BID took note of residents鈥 opinions when it planned the developments. It also considered existing assets in the area, such as dog parks, community gardens and walkways.

Some areas of the underpass have already been developed. The space on the L and Second Street block has dog parks and sidewalks going beneath the overpass. Residents offered mixed reviews of the fixtures already built.

鈥淚 like having a skatepark and a mural wall, but the current version is so decrepit and uninviting,鈥 said Maura Kennedy.

Other residents brought up concerns about the homeless encampments that exist under the currently undeveloped portions of the underpass.

When asked about the project, the first thing Bob Craycraft from Southwest Waterfront North had to say was, 鈥淎ren’t they primarily shelter for the homeless? How would 鈥榬evitalization鈥 impact them?鈥

The BID鈥檚 acknowledged the homeless encampments as a challenge facing the project and said it would find 鈥渓ong-term housing solutions鈥 for anyone using the underpass as a home. The BID did not respond to questions about whether they had any substantive plans to act upon this challenge.

Salmi said that Councilmember Allen had subsidized housing vouchers for his ward in the past, but for matters pertaining to the homeless under Virginia Avenue, he deferred to the office of Mayor Muriel Bowser.

鈥淭he city runs an encampment team that does regular engagement with folks and tries to find a better and long-term living situation for them, so that鈥檚 what we hope is going to happen here as we get closer to construction,鈥 Salmi said.

Salmi also said his team understood the complexities of the situation.

鈥淚t鈥檚 important. In all of these scenarios, we want to see people get into housing. This shouldn鈥檛 be an acceptable place for people to live, and I know it works for the moment,鈥 Salmi said. 鈥淭he whole point is not to punish folks who are out on the street, but it is to get them to a more stable housing environment and assess their individual needs, which can be challenging and can take time.鈥

Salmi said walkable neighborhoods were an important thing on people鈥檚 minds all across D.C., and that this project would help with that.

鈥淚t is ultimately going to be a nice connection between two neighborhoods. It鈥檚 kind of reclaiming space taken by the highway for so long,鈥 Salmi said. 鈥淭he Vision Plan has been in place for a long time, and so it is exciting that it鈥檚 finally moving forward.鈥

Could other areas in D.C. do the same? Navy Yard businesses say yes, but residents remain doubtful.

Sprawling out from the outfield entrance to the Nationals Park, the Navy Yard鈥檚 bar district is a lively place even without the allure of a baseball game. Bars, restaurants and ice cream shops line the streets.

The area consists of M and N streets SE block, with Half Street splitting it down the middle, and it is, according to some, one of the safer nightlife areas in D.C. This can be attributed to the work of local businesses on the block that wanted to make their street safer.

One such business is the Mission Group, a company that owns . Its Navy Yard locations include the Royal Sands Social Club and Mission Navy Yard.

In January 2022, the Mission Group leadership worked with the Capitol Riverfront Business Improvement District and other Navy Yard businesses to find new ways to improve safety on their block.

鈥淲e all share a common goal of wanting to promote safety to our guests, staff and neighbors,鈥 said Fritz Brogan, the managing partner and co-founder of Mission Group.

Tom’s Watch Bar fills with patrons as the night goes on.

鈥淚n addition to our internal security teams, we also helped create an initiative with our neighbors and the BID to hire off-duty MPD officers to patrol the block at night to keep guests and staff safe and help direct traffic for ride-share vehicles,鈥 said Brogan.

Brogan said the initiative also incorporated other safety measures, including security cameras, better street lighting and a communications platform for businesses to instantly communicate with one another.

Gatsby Restaurant, another business on the block, is not a part of the Mission Group鈥檚 initiative, but its director of operations Victoria Gradia said its efforts extend to the rest of the area as well.

鈥淭he streets are brighter, the streets are lighter, and there鈥檚 a lot more security presence in general which has made the area very safe for nightlife,鈥 Gradia said. 鈥淲e all have great neighbors, and we communicate with our neighbors. We鈥檙e there to support each other.鈥

The initiative shows some promise. The block has seen 90 crimes this year to date, which is low compared to other nearby blocks. For comparison, the Capitol Riverfront BID has experienced nearly 600 total crimes this year to date, according to .

But some Navy Yard residents say it isn鈥檛 enough to keep the whole neighborhood safe.

鈥淭his area has a decent nightlife, but it is not as well policed as it could be,鈥 said Southeast Ballpark resident Alex John. 鈥淭here has been a major uptick in robberies in the past three years鈥攙ehicle break-ins, carjackings. I鈥檝e been here almost 15 years and have never seen anything like this.鈥

John said the initiative worked for a hyper-local space, but it did not influence the rest of the neighborhood.

鈥淚 would say its effects do not extend past where there is a police presence,鈥 John said. 鈥淭here are a few neglected areas not far from the bar district that could use some additional presence so patrons can walk home safely a few blocks away.鈥

John referred to the gunshots heard late Saturday night one block away from the ballpark. There have been no official reports, but it left some residents shaken. Vicky Smith posted on a neighborhood Facebook group that she heard 鈥渁round 20 shots鈥 just before midnight.

The Advisory Neighborhood Commission and Metropolitan Police Department did not respond to requests for comment.

Not all residents think the answer lies in a higher police presence, however.

Alexandra H., who asked that 最新蜜桃影像 not publish her full name, is a native of Sweden who moved to Navy Yard a few months ago. Alexandra said she understood the need for police but felt unsure if it was the best solution.

鈥淚鈥檓 happy that it鈥檚 working, but it can鈥檛 be the answer to multiply [the police]. We have to be better than that,鈥 Alexandra H. said.

Alexandra H. said that although she did not want to defund the police, she also did not want so much police presence that she felt as if she was living in a police state.

鈥淢aybe we鈥檙e onto something, but how sad, the principle itself, that we need more police intensely and in every area,鈥 she said. 鈥淪o that is the danger. You need to look at the cause of the problem you are currently solving.鈥

A woman was stabbed at the Navy Yard Metro station last Sunday. The next day, police arrested the suspect, Michael William Harrington, and charged him with assault with intent to kill.

The crime represents a larger trend of increased violent crime in the Navy Yard. Violent crime constitutes of every incident of robbery, homicide, assault with a dangerous weapon, or sex abuse, according to the Metro Police Department.

Sheilah V., a resident from the Southeast Ballpark area of the Navy Yard, who declined to give her last name, said the incident discouraged her from using the Metro.

鈥淭his is one of the many reasons that I just bought a parking pass to drive to work after taking the Metro for over a year,鈥 Sheilah V. told 最新蜜桃影像.

According to Metro Police data, the Navy Yard experienced 64 violent crimes this year to date, compared to the 55 total in 2022. In addition, the data show the amount of violent crime in the Navy Yard has increased by over 200% from 2018 to 2023.

While the assault cases tend to draw the most attention from residents, the vast majority of incidents fall under the category of robberies. Out of all violent crimes seen over the past five years, robberies also show the most consistent increase over time.

Homicides, assault, and sex abuse together only amount to about 15% of violent crimes in 2023 so far. In 2018, those percentages were much more balanced.

Chloe D., a resident from neighboring Waterfront South said crime seemed much worse now than it did in 2018. Chloe D. declined to give her last name.

The neighborhoods on either side of South Capitol Street are similar, 鈥渁lthough I鈥檇 say Southwest used to be safer than Navy Yard, and now it鈥檚 probably about even,鈥 Chloe D. said.

鈥淚t wasn鈥檛 like this when I last lived here, and now it鈥檚 gone to shit,鈥 Chloe D. said. 鈥淚鈥檓 getting the hell out of D.C. ASAP.鈥

The Advisory Neighborhood Commission and local MPD representatives have not yet responded to 最新蜜桃影像鈥檚 requests for comments.
