Operations at Farragut West were restored two hours after a person was struck by a metro train and died on Monday afternoon.

According to a video released by the WMATA, a person jumped in front of the metro train around 1 p.m. Metro Transit Police later ruled their death as a suicide.

Traffic began to pile up immediately thereafter as Metro鈥檚 Orange, Silver and Blue line operated on a single-track.听

Initially, D.C. Fire and EMS were called to the scene of a rescue situation. But once on the scene, Metro Transit Police took over in order to recover the body.

Train services were suspended between Foggy Bottom and Metro Center during the investigation.听

Police advised residents to take other metro stops closer to Farragut North.

Shuttle buses were also available for residents to commute to different lines or intersections during the time of suspension.听

DC Fire and EMS were originally called to the scene for a rescue situation, but later alerted Metro Transit Police that it was now a recovery situation to recover the body. (Kayla Clarke/最新蜜桃影像)

D.C. resident Tera-Marie Jones said she always takes the Farragut West station home after work but was surprised to hear that an incident like this would happen.听

鈥淚 am not used to something like this. Once I realized I couldn鈥檛 use this stop, I just figured I Uber home instead of walking,鈥 Jones said. 鈥淏ut it is really unfortunate for something like this to happen to someone.鈥

D.C. resident Delores Wray said it鈥檚 unfortunate that someone would take their life.听

鈥淟ife is really hard and I wish it never got to that point for that person,鈥 Wray said. 鈥淚 hope if someone needs help, they get in contact with the right people.鈥

In a tweet, Metro Transit Police added that if anyone is feeling any signs of suicidal thoughts, they should contact the suicidal helpline at 1-855-320-5433.

A Shaw-based bank, one of the largest African American-owned banks in the United States, has expanded to New York City and New Jersey.听

Industrial Bank opened up one location in Harlem, New York, and two locations in New Jersey, on Nov. 1, replacing another black-owned bank, , and acquiring all of its deposit accounts in the process.听

According to , Industrial Bank has a total of $433.8 million in assets and $350.9 million in deposits.听

VP Director of Risk Management at Industrial Bank Staria Williams said despite the unfortunate closing of one bank, a historic black-owned bank continues to grow along the east coast.

It is never good news when a minority financial institution has to stop operating鈥 but we are pleased and excited that as a minority-owned bank we were able to make the acquisition.鈥澛 Williams said many of the existing customers of the acquired bank were pleased to know 鈥渢heir bank would remain minority-owned.鈥

Established in 1913 by laborer and entrepreneur John Whitelaw Lewis, Industrial Savings Bank was the first black bank to open in the District.听

But the next year, the bank was forced to close because of the Great Depression. Jesse Mitchell, a Howard University Law School graduate, reopened and reorganized the bank in 1934 naming it Industrial Bank.

Even after Mitchell鈥檚 death, the family-owned business continued growing throughout the District establishing seven different branches in the DMV area.听

Shaw resident Anthony said he grew up in D.C. and remembers how important a bank like Industrial Bank was to the Shaw community during that time.听

鈥淚t has been in this black neighborhood for over 40 years. Since I came to Washington, D.C., it鈥檚 been the bank that all black folks use to go to. They use to go there to get loans for small businesses and it was the only bank that would actually give black people a chance.鈥澛

Anthony also said many small, upcoming businesses would go to Industrial Bank because of their success rate.听

Shaw resident and owner of Metro PCS in Shaw Donald Cambell has been a customer of the Industrial Bank for a long time. Campbell said he is excited that a black-owned business is making progress outside the boundaries of the District.听

鈥淎ny minority business expanding is a great opportunity. I think definitely changing markets is positive. I think they will do they well, plus they have great service,鈥 Campbell said. 鈥淚 have been banking with them for over 25 years, so I think that it is a great opportunity.鈥

Shaw resident Lashae Rouse said she is glad that the only black-owned bank in D.C. is still open despite changes in Shaw.

鈥淎 black-owned bank growing means a lot in this community,鈥 says Rouse.

In a recent , CEO B. Doyle Mitchell said the expansion to New York and New Jersey is only the beginning, but this is a chance to expand their footprint into the northeast area.

A new nonprofit organization in Shaw will help connect local students to professional role models through video chats, seeking to help low-income families who don鈥檛 have access to technology outside of the class.

Dreamwakers is a technology organization geared toward helping less-fortunate families around the world by allowing professionals to conduct class lessons through Google Hangout and Skype.

Students in fourth grade through twelfth grade participate in 45-minute virtual sessions called 鈥渇lash chats.鈥

During these flash chats, professionals around the world call in to speak to students and give them advice to advance their careers. Professionals from the State Department, the White House and other major institutions in the District speak with students, giving them the opportunity to ask questions they may not otherwise have the chance to ask.

Dreamwakers does this by filling a disparity in education caused by lack of technology in many low-income areas, its research shows.

Dreamwakers saw that only 9% of children from America鈥檚 poorest families graduate from college. Less than half of U.S. students feel they are properly prepared or educated for some professions.

According to the Pew Research Center, studies show that teens from lower-income households are specifically impacted by not having access to technology, affecting homework and grades.

The research also showed that in 2015, at least 35% of kids in low-income areas did not have access to broadband or any type of internet, interfering with the completion of homework.

Lack of access to laptops and the internet limit many children in advancing their careers, but this organization is hoping to change that.

Jillian Scott, the organization鈥檚 executive director, said Dreamwakers is eager to create change in the Shaw neighborhood, giving students the opportunity to learn despite what they have or where they are.

鈥淭he overarching goal for this program is that geography does not limit any child to learning or advancing in something they love, and we plan to do just that in D.C,鈥 Scott said.

Monica Logothetis and Annie Medaglia founded Dreamwakers in Charlottesville, Virginia in 2014 to use video technology to connect kids with professionals around the world. Since that time, Dreamwakers has grown to serve over 15,000 students in more than 38 states.

DreamPartners, a network of organizations that partner with Dreamwakers, consists of JetBlue, L鈥檕real, Toyota, NASA, theUnited States Institute of Peace, Athletes for Hope and more.

These companies have allowed Dreamwakers to grow virtually, but it opened many doors for professional speakers to talk with children about their futures and the steps they will take to get there.

While technology is becoming a part of everyday life, many residents like Jaelin McDonald said this is the right time for an organization like Dreamwakers to open in this area.

鈥淭he fact that they have opened something like this in the area can really help kids focus on achieving their goals,鈥 McDonald said.

Shaw resident Terrell Peterson said this is a 鈥渂rilliant鈥 idea for the Shaw neighborhood and children, specifically, because of the increasing amount of low-income families in the area.

鈥淚 have been in D.C. all my life and I continue to see so many families struggle because of gentrification,鈥 Peterson said.

鈥淭echnology is the new thing and it鈥檚 good that this organization is using that to teach students.鈥

The Mystics brought home their first championship this summer and the Capitals took home NHL's big prize in 2018.

This is the Nationals鈥 first time in the World Series, and many residents feel like they have a stake in this series.

One long-time fan John Atwood remembers when the Nationals were called the Senators. Win or lose, he said he鈥檚 still proud of his team and has been waiting for a moment like this for a long time.

鈥淲hen I was a kid, I went to the Senators games in the late 1960s before they left for Texas,鈥 he said. 鈥淔or them to gradually rise to the point where they finally made it to the World Series it’s something I and Washington baseball fans have been waiting for for a lifetime.鈥

D.C. resident Michael Holler said the Nationals have never been the team favored to win and thinks they still have time to make a comeback.

鈥淚f we end up losing, that鈥檚 a tough one. I mean I think kind of going into this series is that we were the wildcard coming in, there is an element of the kind of like the underdog vibe,鈥 Holler said.

While all the hype seems to be revolving around the Nationals, the Washington Capitals had a historic run last year that resulted in their first-ever championship title in the Stanley Cup.

And a similar feat happened much earlier this year with the Washington Mystics when they won their first-ever championship, but many D.C. residents didn鈥檛 seem to care as much.

D.C. resident John Atwood said the Mystics deserve a lot more recognition than they received.

鈥淚鈥檓 disappointed. You know they won the title here in D.C. I do think they deserved a better reaction then they got,鈥 Atwood said.

The Nats will face the Astros in game six of the series tonight, in Houston.

Gun violence in Shaw results in emergency neighborhood meeting 鈥 twice /2019/10/24/gun-violence-in-shaw-results-in-emergency-neighborhood-meeting-twice/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=gun-violence-in-shaw-results-in-emergency-neighborhood-meeting-twice /2019/10/24/gun-violence-in-shaw-results-in-emergency-neighborhood-meeting-twice/#respond Thu, 24 Oct 2019 00:36:58 +0000 /?p=5221 After five recent shootings in Shaw, Ward 6 commissioners and Councilmember Charles Allen have solutions to cut down on gun violence.

The post Gun violence in Shaw results in emergency neighborhood meeting 鈥 twice first appeared on 最新蜜桃影像.

]]>
Dozens of frustrated Shaw residents pressed ANC commissioners and Metropolitan Police about gun violence and the spate of recent shootings at a heated emergency meeting last night 鈥 the second such meeting within the last two weeks.

There have been a total of five shootings in Shaw since the beginning of October and residents in the area are demanding that the violence stop.

At both emergency meetings, commissioners heard complaints from residents, business owners and other Shaw officials about the recent shootings.听

Dori Smith, a neighborhood resident, and community advocate said she fears her own child may be next.

鈥淚 am a volunteer, but most importantly I am a mother whose son goes to Barbara聽Chambers Children Center where there was a bullet through the window back in May,鈥 she said. 鈥淎nd it鈥檚 only a matter of time before that shooting happens during the day and my child is still there.鈥

Smith is an active volunteer with Mom鈥檚 Demand Action, an organization that advocates on behalf of residents who are facing upticks in gun-related violence.

MPD officials say they have been tracking violence in the neighborhood since at least 2017. Most suspects are repeat offenders, police said.

鈥淲hat I see, I see the same names over and over and over again committing these crimes,鈥 said Patrol Chief Lamar Green at the first emergency meeting on Oct. 9.

Green said the overall crime rate in the city has gone down and that officers are getting out into the communities quicker, but robberies are up by 9% this year in Shaw.听

Police, however, say they are working to eliminate the gun violence crisis.

One solution proposed earlier this month was at-home surveillance. D.C. Councilmember Charles Allen (D-Ward 6), said home cameras can be used to catch neighborhood violence.

Mayor Bowser initiated the Private Security Camera Incentive Program in 2015 that allows people to install private security cameras around their homes. Since 2015, the program has funded at least 15,000 cameras that may aid police in criminal investigations.

The ward is also adding more funding for lights and street cameras.

鈥淭hat is not going to be a permanent solution, but it鈥檚 a way to respond to it immediately,鈥 Allen said.

Council member Charles Allen’s main objective is to make sure the Shaw neighborhood is safe.

Allen and MPD are also pushing for more officers on foot.听

MPD plans to hire approximately 4,000 more officers partly in order to sustain the neighborhood patrol increases.

Commissioners agree that MPD鈥檚 duty is to protect Shaw, but many urged residents to do their part by keeping watch and reporting gun violence when they see or hear it.听

Ward 6 Commissioner Alexander Padro has been representing Shaw for 19 years. On Oct. 9, he demanded more from the officers sworn to serve and protect.

鈥淚 would like all of us to collectively ask the third district and MPD to bring back foot beats that we will be able to see on a regular basis,鈥 Padro said.听

He led commissioners and residents in attendance in a 鈥渇oot beats, now鈥 chant, calling on the police to increase the number of patrol officers on foot.

MPD and the Shaw wards will continue to use these solutions and plan to have an additional meeting for future steps in ending the gun violence in Shaw and surrounding neighborhoods.听

Developers in the Shaw neighborhood continue construction at a historic building that will house the new African American Civil War Memorial Museum.听

Built in 1887, Grimke Elementary School once operated as a school but was later used for the DC Department of Corrections and the DC Fire and EMS.听

On Sept. 9, Community Three Development Team began the demo phase, which is scheduled to be done by the end of the year.听

The 9陆 St. Initiative Project will redevelop Grimke School into office space and more.听

The program will consist of new offices and cultural uses, the African American Civil War museum new space and residential uses as well,鈥 said Mwangi Gathinji, the vice president of development at Community Three.

The 13,000 square foot space at the bottom of the new building will hold the museum, which will separate into four exhibit spaces.听

The four exhibits will focus on the Civil Rights Movement, the voting legacy of the U.S. Colored Trips, First Lady Michelle Obama鈥檚 Civil War ancestors and the causes and consequences of the Civil War.

Since the museum is expanding, they do plan to bring in more historical pieces.听

The African American Civil War Museum was first opened in January 1999 but is now being permanently moved to Grimke School. The museum will face the East Side of Vermont. Ave. (Architectural drawing courtesy of the African American Civil War Museum)

“The museum will display voting booths from the Civil War, Civil War-era school books and multiple interactives throughout the new space including a searchable database for Civil War records,” said Edwin Gasaway, the Operations Manager at the African American Civil War Memorial Museum.听

The project will consist of three total buildings: the Grimke School site building, the current annex building, which will be converted into work and living spaces, and a new residential building that will be six-stories consisting of 40 housing units and 12 of those affordable units at the rear site off the alley of 9 陆 St. NW, according to Gathinji.

Director and Curator of the American University Museum at the Katzen Arts Center John Rasmussen said that this move will bring the museum more visibility.

“Obviously it hasn’t been very visible before because I have never heard of it and I am surprised I have never heard of it, “Rasmussen said. “This is a great subject and I am glad they are doing a lot more work around the Civil War.”

Residents will be able to see the remodeled Grimke School Building in October 2020. The entire project will be completely finished in October 2021.

Opossums, foxes, raccoons are new nighttime surprises from the D.C. Cat Count Project.听

For the past few weeks, the project team has placed cameras in different聽neighborhoods like Shaw, Adams Morgan, Columbia Heights, Park View and Pleasant聽Plains.

In 2018, The Human Rescue Alliance (HRA), Petsmart Charities, the Humane Society of聽The United States, the Smithsonian Institution and The American Society for the Prevention of聽Cruelty to Animals partnered together to start this three-year program counting cats in D.C.鈥檚 neighborhoods through action sensor cameras.

聽Their initial plan is to estimate the number of outdoor cats and owned cats in the city, but their project is showing more than that.听

鈥淲e have discovered that there is a wide variety of wildlife living in the city,鈥 said Lauren聽Lipsey, the vice president of community programs at the Humane Rescue Alliance said.

According to Lipsey, cameras are placed in different neighborhoods for two to four weeks and then removed. Researchers analyze camera to determine the amount of wildlife in that one area and how cats move through different environments.

Since the start of this project, the cameras have captured cats, of course, but other nighttime species too: opossums carrying their babies, foxes stopping for a water break and even cats requesting personal space.听

A post shared by (@dccatcount) on

Though this project is specific to counting cats, Humane Rescue Alliance provides independent services aimed at rescuing and caring for these cats.听

鈥淲e operate animal control so we respond if there is a sick or stray cat outside, hold the animal for a stray period, and then place them up for adoption,鈥 Lipsey said.

Humane Rescue Alliance also identifies what they call blue-collared cats 鈥斅爓ild cats not suitable for pets but placed at businesses to help eliminate insects and pests.听

鈥淲e will trap them, spay, neuter and vaccinate them and then release them back into the location,鈥 Lipsey said.听

A post shared by (@dccatcount) on

Many cat-owners love the idea of this project and what it is doing for the community.听

鈥淐ats are really helpful and very independent. They get rats, insects and a lot of other things out. I think its really good that this project is saving them and having people eventually adopt them,鈥 said cat-owner Sydonna Lawrence.听

The DC Cat Count project will finish collecting the data in 2021. With help from others and data through their findings, they will be able to determine how they can make the environment liveable for cats and other wildlife species in the future.
