Fire department personnel received a call at 9:55 a.m. about a fire on the 3900 block of Tunlaw Road NW. The fire occurred on the third floor of a sixth story apartment building, according to D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services.聽

Firefighter investigators are trying to determine the cause of the fire, though they know it was started by a boiler, said Vito Maggiolo, the public information officer for D.C. Fire.聽

The fire was 鈥渞elatively small and confined to a boiler,鈥 Maggiolo said, though it 鈥渃reated a considerable amount of smoke that escaped to several floors.鈥

Fire department personnel evacuated one individual who they say attempted to fight the fire with a portable extinguisher, Maggiolo said. That individual declined medical treatment.

Marcia Goulding, who lives on the fifth floor sat on a nearby bench and watched silently as firefighters put out the fire. 鈥淚 just woke up an hour ago. I have barely gotten settled for the day,鈥 she said. 鈥淚鈥檓 not sure what caused the fire,鈥 she continued as firefighters worked to clear smoke from the floors. 鈥淚 know for sure that this doesn鈥檛 happen every day, though.鈥澛

As bad as a fire is, Goulding said she isn鈥檛 shaken, as she wasn鈥檛 displaced or significantly harmed.聽

Police said no one has been displaced because of the boiler fire, including the person who tried putting it out.聽

鈥淔or me, it鈥檚 just some smoke,鈥 Goulding said. 鈥淣othing I can鈥檛 handle.鈥
