First of all, my senior year, 1955-6, I had a black chemistry teacher, Archibald Lucas, as I recall. So he was the first black teacher at WW.
I think what bothers me the most in all this turmoil is that the George Floyd issue became the catalyst for instigating the change. All lives matter for certain, but it’s been established that Floyd was not a solid citizen in any way. To say otherwise is to put him in the same category as Rosa Parks, a remarkable and courageous woman.
In times of a weak economy, to incur the burden of having to rebrand everything remotely aligned with Woodrow Wilson, seems ludicrous.
Actually, each change of names in our highways, roads, public buildings, and such is “understandable”, but a bit of a “knee jerk” reaction started by a small sector of society.
All that money spent on changing so much of our landmarks won’t “change” history, and could’ve been spent on our nation’s poverty situation, especially how it’s been affecting education to those underserved for way too long.
I received a wonderful education at Woodrow Wilson High School, and went on to become a teacher for over thirty years. I’m pretty sure that changing the name of my Alma mater won’t have any noticeable effect on the present day educational experience there.
These are my humble observations on what is a moot point.
I wish only the best for all concerned in this newly renamed place of education.
“GO TIGERS”!
